What happens to my website if I stop paying?
Most people only learn what happens when they stop paying after it has already happened. The site is offline on a Monday, a customer cannot find the number, and nobody is sure whether the problem is the hosting, the domain, or the plan.
This article walks through each case in order, so you know what to expect before a payment is missed and what to do if one is.
What happens to my website if I stop paying?
It depends on which payment stops, because a website rests on two separate things. Hosting keeps the pages online. The domain keeps your address pointed at them. Each has its own bill and its own consequence.
If the hosting payment stops, the host eventually takes the site offline, even though your domain still exists. If the domain payment stops, the site may still be stored on the server, but nobody can reach it by name.
| Payment missed | What happens first | What you lose |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | The site is paused or taken offline | Visitors see an error or a maintenance page |
| Domain | The address stops resolving after a grace period | Your site and any email on that domain |
| Both | The site is offline and the address can be bought by someone else | Both, and possibly the name itself |
How does a paused website work at Sun City Marketing?
We state this openly. When a Hosting Care Plan payment is due and unpaid, the site gets 3 days, and then it is placed on Pause until the payment is made or the website is transferred to you. A paused site shows a plain notice that the website is temporarily offline. Nothing is deleted.

That is the whole mechanism. You can restore the site by paying, or take the finished file set and host it elsewhere. The plan is $110 every 90 days, and the pricing page spells out what it covers.
What happens to my domain if I don't renew it?
Registrars handle a lapsed domain in stages, and the exact timing differs from one company to the next. In general, the domain stops working first, then enters a grace period during which you can still renew it, and later it is released so that anyone can register it.
Check your registrar's policy for the dates. The safest approach is to keep the renewal date on your own calendar and to confirm the domain is registered in your name, in an account you can log into.
Know who holds your domain
The domain is your business address. We help you register it in your own name, and the renewal stays your responsibility.
See what is includedIs it better to pause or cancel a subscription?
If you plan to come back, a pause keeps everything intact. If you are leaving for good, cancel, but take the finished files first. Cancelling a hosting plan without a copy of the site can leave you with a domain and nothing to put on it.

How do I shut down a website permanently?
Back up the files, cancel the hosting, and decide what to do with the domain. You can keep renewing it so no one else takes the name, or let it lapse once you are sure you will not need it. If customers still use the address, set a redirect or a short notice first, so they are not left at an error page.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my website if I stop paying for hosting?
The host eventually takes the site offline, even though the domain still exists. Visitors see an error or a maintenance page. At Sun City Marketing the site is paused 3 days after an unpaid Care Plan payment, and nothing is deleted.
What happens to my domain if I don't renew it?
It stops resolving, enters a grace period that varies by registrar, and is later released for anyone to register. Check your registrar's policy for the exact dates.
Can I get my website back after it is paused?
Yes. With a Care Plan, paying the balance restores the site, or you can take the finished file set and host it elsewhere.
Is it better to pause or cancel a subscription?
Pause if you plan to return and cancel if you are leaving for good. Before cancelling, make sure you have a copy of your site files.
Does hosting include the domain?
No. At Sun City Marketing hosting never covers the domain. You renew it yourself, or you pay us to handle it, and it stays in your name.
