Local SEO checklist: 30 things to do this month

Dan• February 11, 2026• 6 min read

Most local contractors do not have a marketing team. They have a phone, a Google Business Profile set up years ago, and a website nobody has touched since launch day. If that sounds familiar, this list is for you. These are 30 concrete actions, most under 20 minutes, that move the needle on local search visibility for trades and service businesses across Riverside County and Southern California.

They are sorted into five categories: Google Business Profile, citations, on-page SEO, content, and reviews. You do not have to do all 30 this month. Knock out one category a week and you will be ahead of most of your competition by the end of it.

The 15 percent rule: most of your competitors do maybe 5 of these 30 things. Local SEO is not about being perfect. It is about being 15 percent more complete than the next contractor. Finish 20 of these and you are in the top tier for your market.

Google Business Profile

  • 1. Verify your NAP is 100 percent consistent. Name, address, and phone must match exactly across your profile, website, and every citation. Even "St." versus "Street" creates ranking friction.
  • 2. Add or update your service area. List every city you actually serve. Google Business Profile allows up to 20 service areas. Name Riverside, Moreno Valley, Hemet, San Jacinto, Menifee, and Perris if you serve them.
  • 3. Upload 5 new photos. The profile rewards active accounts. Add real job photos from this month, not stock images, and label the file with the service type before uploading.
  • 4. Post an update. Write a short post, 150 to 300 words, about a recent project or a seasonal service. These posts are indexed by Google and appear in local pack results.
  • 5. Check your primary category. Your primary category is the single biggest ranking factor for the local pack. If you are a plumber, choose "Plumber," not "Contractor."
  • 6. Add every secondary category that applies. A plumber can add "Water Heater Repair Service," "Drainage Service," and "Septic System Service." More categories means more search surfaces.
  • 7. Answer every unanswered question. The Q&A section is publicly editable. Answer all of it. Seed your own if there are none: "Do you serve Murrieta?" plus the answer.
  • 8. Enable messaging. Google rewards profiles with messaging turned on. It takes two minutes. Set an auto-reply so you do not miss leads.

Citations

  • 9. Claim your Yelp listing. Yelp is a top-tier citation. Unclaimed, anyone can edit your information. Claim it, fill out every field, add photos, and match your NAP exactly.
  • 10. Claim or update Bing Places. Bing carries 6 to 8 percent of U.S. search volume. It costs nothing and takes 15 minutes. Most contractors skip it, which makes it an edge.
  • 11. Check Apple Maps. Apple pulls from third parties, but you can claim your listing directly through Apple Business Connect. iPhone users see Apple Maps by default.
  • 12. Verify your BBB listing exists. The Better Business Bureau has strong domain authority. Even without accreditation, a listing with consistent NAP is a solid second-tier citation.
  • 13. Check HomeAdvisor and Angi. Search your business name. If there is a listing you did not create, claim it and fix the NAP. Unclaimed listings often carry wrong data.
  • 14. Run a citation audit. Search "[your business name] [your city]" and review the first three pages. Every listing with a wrong NAP is a citation working against you. Fix the top 10 this month.

On-page SEO

  • 15. Check your H1 tag. Your homepage H1 should include your primary service and city. "Plumber in Riverside, CA" beats "Welcome to Our Site." One H1 per page.
  • 16. Rewrite your title tag. Format: [Primary Service] in [City] | [Business Name], under 60 characters. This is what shows in Google results, so write it for people.
  • 17. Write a meta description for every page. 150 to 160 characters, including your city, your service, and a soft call to action such as "Call for an estimate." Meta descriptions do not rank directly, but they drive click-through.
  • 18. Add LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema to your homepage. Schema tells Google what your business is, where you are, and what you do. It takes about 20 minutes and improves rich-result eligibility right away.
  • 19. Check mobile page speed. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights. Anything under 70 on mobile is a problem: slow sites rank lower and lose leads before the call.
  • 20. Compress every image over 100 KB. Large images are the top cause of slow mobile load times. Use Squoosh or a similar tool to get standard images under 80 KB and thumbnails under 50 KB.
  • 21. Add internal links between service pages. If you have a Plumbing page and a Water Heater page, they should link to each other. Internal links pass authority and help Google map your site.

Content

  • 22. Write one city-specific page. A dedicated page for "Plumbing Services in Hemet, CA" ranks for Hemet searches in a way your homepage never will. Aim for 400 to 600 words, a real NAP at the bottom, and a service-area match with your profile.
  • 23. Publish one blog post. It does not have to be long. 300 to 500 words answering a real customer question, such as "How much does drain cleaning cost in Riverside County," ranks and converts.
  • 24. Add an FAQ section to your homepage. Google pulls FAQ schema into rich results. Write 4 to 6 questions your customers actually ask and mark them up properly. It is search real estate you do not pay for.
  • 25. Embed a Google Map on your contact page. Google favors sites that reference their location data consistently. An embedded map is a low-effort local signal that almost no contractor bothers with.
  • 26. Create a Service Areas page. One page listing every city and zip code you serve, with a short paragraph for each. This is how you compete in surrounding cities without building 20 separate pages.

Reviews

  • 27. Text your last 5 customers a review request. The highest-converting request is a personal text, not an automated email. "Hey [name], great working with you. Would you mind leaving us a Google review? [link]" is all you need.
  • 28. Respond to every review you have not answered. Google explicitly rewards businesses that respond. Answer the 5-star reviews. Answer the 1-star reviews professionally. Never ignore one.
  • 29. Add a review link to your email signature. Every email is an opportunity. Put "Leave us a Google review" with a direct link at the bottom of every outbound message.
  • 30. Set a monthly review target. Aim for at least two new reviews a month and track it. A steady stream of recent reviews consistently outranks a larger pile that stopped growing in 2022.

The trades on page one in Riverside County did not win by having the best service. They won by having the most complete, active, and consistent digital presence. That is entirely in your control, and it does not require an agency or a budget. It requires doing the work month after month.
