Why is my website not showing up on Google?

Dan• October 11, 2026• 4 min read

A live website that nobody can find on Google is one of the most common problems we see, and it is usually simpler than owners expect. The site is not ranking badly. In many cases it is not in Google's index at all, which means it cannot rank for anything.

This article walks through the causes in the order to check them, so you can tell an indexing problem from a ranking problem and fix the right one.

Why is my website not showing up on Google?

Start with the plain question: is the site in Google at all? Search for your domain with the word site and a colon in front of it, like site:yourbusiness.com. If nothing comes back, Google has not indexed the pages. If results appear, the pages are indexed and the issue is ranking, which is a different job.

A 200 response does not mean a page is indexable. A site can load perfectly for a visitor and still tell Google to stay away, through a single line in the page's head.

What blocks Google from indexing a site?

CauseHow to spot itThe fix
A noindex tag left on from stagingThe page source has a robots tag set to noindexReplace it with an explicit index, follow
A robots.txt that blocks crawlingSearch Console reports the page as blockedCorrect the robots.txt rules
No path inNo other page links to it and no sitemap lists itLink it from the site and submit a sitemap
A brand new site or pageNothing is wrong yetRequest indexing and wait

The first cause is the one that catches people. Sites are built in staging with a noindex tag so they stay out of search, and the tag has to come off when the site goes live. We have seen a paid client build ship with that tag still on every page, and it sat invisible to Google until it was caught. That is why our go-live checklist verifies every page live, not just the home page.

A site can be fully built and still not appear in search. Being there and being found are two separate things.

How do I get my website to show up on Google?

Work through these steps in order.

1. Check the robots tag on every page and make sure it says index, follow. 2. Submit a sitemap in Google Search Console so Google has a list of your pages. 3. Request indexing for the home page and your main pages with the URL Inspection tool. 4. Link to the pages from your own site and from your business profiles, so crawlers find them. 5. Add Local SEO Schema Markup so Google can read who you are and where you work.

Why is Google not crawling my website?

Crawling takes time and it depends on signals. A new site with no links and no sitemap gives Google little reason to visit. A site with a robots block or a noindex tag tells Google not to. Fix the blocks first, then give Google a way in with a sitemap and links.

How long does it take for a website to show up on Google?

Google has said indexing can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for a new site. Requesting indexing and submitting a sitemap speed the first visit, and they do not guarantee a position. We show our clients Google Search Console screenshots at 30, 60, and 90 days so the indexing, impressions, and clicks are visible, and we never promise a ranking.

A marker only helps when someone can find it. A sitemap and a clean robots tag do the same job for a website.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my website not showing up on Google?

The site may not be indexed. Search for site:yourbusiness.com to check. If nothing appears, look for a noindex tag, a robots.txt block, or a missing sitemap, and request indexing in Google Search Console.

How do I check whether Google has indexed my website?

Search for your domain with the site operator, or paste a page address into the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console, which reports whether the page is indexed.

How long does it take for a new website to show up on Google?

Anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Submitting a sitemap and requesting indexing speed up the first visit, but they do not set a position.

Can a website load fine and still be invisible to Google?

Yes. A page can return a normal response and still carry a noindex tag, which tells Google not to index it. That is why we check every page live at go-live.

Does indexing guarantee I will rank?

No. Indexing means Google knows the page exists. Where it appears depends on many other signals, and no one can promise a ranking.
